The site is close to the Chungpyong Lake and has hilly mountain on the back and view towards to the lake in front. As most of sites on hills in Korea, Leaning House site also has a mismatch between topography and orientation. Therefore, one of the first things to solve was the siting of the house in the position where it can have southern sunlight as well as view towards the lake. The southern part of the program box is lifted up so that the house can get enough sunlight from the South while the house itself orients to the East following the topography of the site. By lifting the box up, a new space was gained where Glass Box for family room can be inserted.Save this picture!Section 1Topology & TypologyIn the Leaning House, instead of putting a separate structure to the mass, the form of massing works as a structural system. The “Leaning Box” has a frame structure at the envelope of the box, and is supported by the vertical “Glass Box” so that it can eliminate redundant structural element.Save this picture!© Kyungsub ShinThis concept is driven by the architectural vocabulary “Topology & Typology” that PRAUD has been developing. The “Topology & Typology” is a theoretical experiment that is based on Anthony Vidler’s theory on typology. “Topology” focuses on the form of architecture regarding to the relationship between solid and void, while “Typology” develops the system of the building. In short, “Topology & Typology” tries to find out the harmony between the architectural form and the system that can be called as “Contemporarism”, architectural language of contemporary architecture, just as Modernism became the architectural language not the style in a certain period of time.Save this picture!© Kyungsub ShinThird-spaceBy lifting up the program box, a new space “Third Space” is gained. The original requirement from the client was to have bedroom, reading room and living room, and with having the third space, it was able to put a new living room inside and terrace on the outside.Save this picture!© Kyungsub ShinThe “Third Space” provides more gradation for the house. The outside terrace is not fully public yet not fully private space either. Also, inside living room is also a semi-public area within the house before getting into more private area. This variation in gradation gives deeper spatial quality in a small house project.Save this picture!Ground Floor PlanMaterialIt is extremely important in the Leaning House to have the reading of the “box.” In many cases, including projects with Modernism, envelops are treated separate, and therefore, the facade has one design and material, and the roof has another. However, to challenge the convention, the Leaning House treats all surfaces as part of one box and has same material throughout the surfaces with continuous pattern. Zinc is selected to wrap the whole box with a single material as it can be used for roof, siding and exterior ceiling. And continuous diagonal lines across the envelop enhances the reading of the box.Save this picture!© Kyungsub ShinProject gallerySee allShow lessFrank Gehry Claims Today’s Architecture is (Mostly) “Pure Shit”Architecture NewsSalle Polyvalente de Plumergat / Studio 02Selected Projects Share PRAUD, Changbok Yimcenter_img ShareFacebookTwitterPinterestWhatsappMailOrhttps://www.archdaily.com/558697/leaning-house-praud Clipboard ArchDaily Save this picture!© Kyungsub Shin+ 36 Share “COPY” “COPY” Area:  127 m² Area:  127 m² Photographs PRAUD, Changbok Yim Houses Landscape: last_img read more

Anti-NATO protests in Sweden, Germany

first_imgStockholm — More than 350 people gathered in central Stockholm on Sept. 9 to protest U.S. and other NATO participation in the Aurora military exercises in Sweden. Demonstrators saw Sweden’s participation as proof of a gradual movement toward membership in NATO.Sweden has been a neutral country in all European wars since the Napoleonic wars 200 years ago.The right-wing parties in opposition have openly called for Sweden to join NATO. Because of strong popular support for non-alignment, the left-of-center ruling coalition has refrained from openly espousing such a major change.Sweden has become more entangled with U.S. foreign policy in recent years. U.S. components are used in the JAS fighter jet produced by SAAB, and Swedish arms are used, contrary to Swedish law, in conflicts in the Middle East.Anti-imperialists in Sweden have protested against the small contingent of Swedish troops participating in the so-called “Partnership for Peace” operation in Afghanistan, as well as against Swedish reconnaissance aid during the bombing of Libya and the training of separatist Peshmerga (Kurdish) troops in Iraq. Under extreme U.S. pressure, even non-NATO countries have been forced to contribute to U.S.-coalition actions under the guise of “fighting terrorism.”NATO policy is based on a nuclear umbrella “defense guarantee” that few in Sweden wish to be part of. Recently 121 nations in the U.N. General Assembly, including Sweden, adopted a convention calling for the total prohibition of nuclear weapons. The U.S. government then sent a threatening letter to the Swedish defense minister, warning that Swedish ratification of the convention would endanger all future military cooperation and assistance to Sweden. This blatant interference in a Swedish decision has infuriated opponents of the ongoing exercises and of any moves toward further NATO involvement. A broad national demonstration is planned in the city of Gothenburg on the Sept. 16 weekend.5,000 ring Ramstein AFB, GermanyIn a major action by the German peace movement, some 5,000 people ringed the perimeter of Ramstein Air Force Base in western Germany on Sept. 9 to protest NATO aggression and the U.S. use of drones to kill people. Ramstein is the center for U.S. drone operations worldwide — operations responsible for killing hundreds of civilians as they allegedly target “terrorist” leaders. One major global defense contractor involved in drone-related development for the U.S. is Saab Defense and Security, whose U.S. headquarters is in Syracuse, N.Y. It recently was co-awarded a $9.6 million contract from the U.S. military’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). (syracuse.com, August 30)These European protests may present a welcome obstacle to U.S. efforts to increase European involvement in its global military operations.FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thisFacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailPrintMoreShare thislast_img read more
